I hope you all enjoyed Father’s Day. How many of you received a tie for a gift? Neckties are the most common present on this day, or used to be.
Abraham Lincoln said, “My father taught me to work, but not to love it. I never did like to work, and I don’t deny it. I’d rather read, tell stories, crack jokes, talk, laugh–anything but work.”
Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem with paternal advice for his son. Here are two lines of it:
“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same.”
Umberto Eco, an Italian writer said, “I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”
